Giuliani visits; McCain up next

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, a 2008 Republican presidential candidate, spent a few hours Sunday near Hughson at a private fund-raiser at the home of businessman Jim Duarte. Giuliani arrived at 2 p.m. and stayed for two hours, talking about immigration and the economy, among other topics affecting the region. "He showed he had good command of the issues. ... He was very good," Duarte said. About 75 people attended the event. This morning, the area will receive another visit from a Republican presidential candidate. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., will attend a private event at Dewz restaurant in downtown Modesto. State Sen. Jeff Denham, R-Merced, and developer Gerry Kamilos are the hosts. Afterward, McCain is expected to meet with reporters at the Stanislaus County Courthouse.
